Trading

Decisions made around income would be guided by a Parks Charitable Trust’s core values. It could be that the Parks Charitable Trust does not work with organisations whose ethics do not support these values. However, this would limit the charity’s abilities to meet running costs and generate income.

"Trading should be ethical and reflect community values. So, a Trust should be mindful about public access in particular to areas and facilities." — Workshop Team Three

The fear is short-term thinking - a decision on trading that plugs a shortfall in income temporarily but causes longer-term problems by damaging the park or alienating users. The park must make income, that's absolutely clear to everyone, but long-term and sustainable (in both senses) options should be preferred. Sometimes that won't work and a stopgap has to be chosen but if the Trust has a clear principle that it prefers this approach (and I hope it will) that will shape the kinds of bids received.

As long as it doesn't harm the space then I say go for the money. When the trust is more established it can pick and choose where it goes for money.

"Trading should be guided by community values but a possible charitable trust cannot necessarily ban Coke from cafes. Still, it would need to consider whether any proposal, initiative and organisation reflect parks’ values and subsequently whether it should be allowed or otherwise to splash their logos all over the parks." — Workshop Team 2
