Events

More community groups and commercial events companies could be organising events in Newcastle’s parks. This could provide a source of income through ticket sales and hiring of facilities. Events could offer new exciting outdoor entertainment but potentially restrict park use for a limited time.

"We have some ethical and environmental concerns. A suitable balance with events needs to be struck and there should be strong control over the quality of events. Community events, which have intrinsic value should be kept free wherever possible." —Workshop Team Two

"Events would need to be very carefully planned and looked after and the number of events allowed per year should be restricted. We would need to take into account the parks environment and which event might be suitable to the different parks as well as any possible damage that events may cause. Events in this sense needs to be carefully curated and selected." — Workshop Team One

Most of the negative things I've heard about events are noise pollution. It's not really a big deal is it as long as them abide by volume levels and stop at the legal time. Events that are driven towards the younger age spectrums will generate more money. I'm sure a small fee for the petting zoo at Jesmond dene would generate a huge sum annually like wise why are the tennis courts not financially managed in Armstrong Park? It may already exist, but why doesn't a chunk of land get set aside for growing food by volunteers which could then be sold in a farmers market.

Totally depends on the type of events. The people putting on events should totally be charged but you should also ensure that the events area not too often and inline with the values of the park. You'd need an events co-ordinator who could ensure all of this.

In line with other comments here... yes, holding events is viable (I can imagine some kind of literature festival in Jesmond Dene already) but there need to be limits, first, in terms of frequency (meaning: for every day used for an event there must be a given number of days that are event-free, e.g. a two day event must be followed by ten days without events - this will avoid parks been taken over by "daisy-chaining" events together - there would also need to be a limit on weekend use, e.g. no more than one weekend used in every three). Second: there would probably need to be a list of acceptable activities drawn up and acceptable limits on, e.g. noise, attendance, etc within those activities.

Ethical and environmental concerns over events. There should be strong limitation/control of quantity of events. Community focused events should still be free (e.g. Park Run) as these have intrinsic value. A suitable balance needs to be struck. -- Workshop Team 2

All things being equal, parks should promote events. They already do, - Park Run, Theatre, festivals, eco-festival etc. But i'd not want to see parks opened up for ANY external organisation to use. -- Workshop Team 2

I do think we have to be pragmatic and the staging of events might generate a lot of income, but this needs to be put into the 'common pot' to secure the future of all our parks. National not local funding. -- Workshop Team 2

Only a small level of events. - Hyde Park has been destroyed as a public park by the volume of events. - Also the noise disruption impact on local residents. -- Workshop Team 2

Events with amplified music should be limited to only a few per year, as amplified music disturbs people over a wide area.

"Events space should be carefully chosen as not all parks are suitable for events. It would be a good way to generate income and attract visitors as long as it doesn’t interfere with wild-life. There should be a significant amount of control in term of selecting which events are appropriate in which park." — Workshop Team 2

"An event officer would be needed (her/his cost could be covered by events). Such role could oversee all events in all parks. Events’ organisers might be happier to contribute to a charity than the council. All events would need to accessed for suitable locations." — Workshop Team 1

I think that the parks should have an events officer who will actively look at ways to generate income from events. Well-run events will not only generate income but will bring people into the parks and make them a more vibrant place. Perhaps volunteers could help with setting up events and clearing up afterwards. However we should ensure that events do not cause to much disruption to neighbours or cause damage to the parks.

Charging is fine for commercial activities, but community and local voluntary groups should have free use - there is a risk that charges would squeeze out activities that encourage green and healthy public events.
