Organising

Coordinating all volunteers centrally would help to ensure that all parks were properly looked after and that work was distributed across the city. However, local park community groups have better knowledge of their local parks and are passionate about their local environments. But not all parks are supported by community groups.

Should a Parks Charitable Trust coordinate volunteers across the city?

How would you improve this or do it differently?

"Develop ownership of parks throughout democratic means with officials or staff to oversee a mixture of volunteers and activists, with new structures for democratic management; we should be learning from the management of allotments." —Workshop Team Four

Has the council done any research regarding the numbers of volunteers/volunteer hours/coordinators/resources that would be needed to run each park sustainably over..oh...lets say the next 5 years? If you could present people with a plan for consultation it.would be useful. It

Centrally run/organised volunteers is a great thing for communities..however, eventually someone needs to be paid to be responsible for the parks.

Projects need central management leadership. The voluntary sector is sporadic. Lots of people want to volunteer in Jesmond Dene, not so much on the Iris Brick field. A centrally run coordinate can manage resource better than individual groups.

Stop posting bar graphs with hardly any data #NewcastleParks. When only 2 people have input into a question it's not appropriate to say 100% of people agree, or its a 50-50% split. It's just misleading.

If there was some kind of online forum such as this one, it would be much easier to coordinate between the Trust and different groups.

I think that there has to be coordination but that the needs of individual parks and of local groups of volunteers should be taken into account. The volunteer effort should be tailored to meet local needs but there should still be an overall central coordination

"A flexible system - similar to the current one - would be needed. Finding a balance between offering volunteers local opportunities to develop ownership and opportunities to work across the city. However, an additional layer/level of management would be detrimental – adding costs. Grassroots and community ownership is important but it would need a lot of support." — Workshop Team
