Car Parks

Car parks could be a way of securing a reliable source of income for a future parks charity. Car parking could be expanded on selected sites and charges implemented.

"we would be happy for existing car parks to charge a fee. However, car parking revenue should be ring-fenced for that specific park. Could potentially consider new car parks, but only if not impinging on the parkland/experience." —Workshop Team One

"We would not support the creation of new parking spaces (though if there were reasons and the right circumstances we would consider it). But in the city, there should be more strategic planning - not seeing parks in isolation (eg. connecting parks through cycle routes, etc.). Perhaps we should begin looking at parks in a different way and for example look for ways to turn car parks into more green spaces. Friends and volunteers should be able to use car parks for free depending on location and impact on local residents we would broadly support charging for parking spaces." — Workshop Team Three

"There should be no building of new car parks on park sites; there should be no driving through parks as it is unsafe; for existing car parks, it would be acceptable to charge a reasonable fee, with explicit signage explaining that the money will contributing to the upkeep of the park. Free disabled access parking should be provided." — Workshop Team One

It's actually insane the car parks around Armstrong Park and Jesmond Dene are free. Tynemouth know how to make money from visitors. We should follow suit.

More carparking means more cars going to the park. The point is to be in a space where there are not cars. Whilst I appreciate car parking is important more focus should be given in improving walking, cycling and public transport links to parks.

Takes a lot of car parking to raise a lot of money taking into account the cost of administration

It totally depends how much! £2 yes, £10 no! you need to ensure bus routes are sorted to allow access.

My view is that jesmond dene for example could charge for parking near the entrance as the park is well used by car drivers who walk their dogs, do sport in the park etc. It is often congested by traffic and car parking charges may ease that situation. People should be encouraged to walk to the park, or cycle. The traffic is a recent phenomenon, we have lived in jesmond for 35 years and only recently has traffic built up around the entrance.

I do think car parking should be charged for with proceeds going back to the charity... but I don't think the number of spaces should be increased. You would have to sacrifice a chunk of park for the purpose, which kind of defeats the point.

Ideally I would like to see car parking free and no extra spaces created, but realistically the parks will need to generate income somehow and car parking is one obvious area. If car parking spaces are increased it should be done in a way so as to have the least impact on the parks.

I'm against the creation of extra car parking space at any park. We should be improving public transport links and increasing cycle parking instead. How can anyone give any detailed view on park funding without knowing the current budgetary/financial situation of our parks?

"In principle, we are in favour of car parking funds being used provided that: it doesn’t take up green space from the parks; there is care for air pollution; the distribution of income for the parks is attached to the car parking or pro-rata." — Workshop Team 2

"Depending on where car parks are situated, modest charges could be positive. However special fares should be given to volunteers and friends of parks who contribute to the park’s upkeep. Money generated through car parking charges should be re-invested in the parks but costs should be reasonable. Parking should be allowed only at selected venues." — Workshop Team

Paving over even a small part of our parks should be blocked at every level; the space available to be inhabited by wildlife should be maximised wherever possible, ideally creating corridors for animals to pass through, certainly not destroying them. We need more biodiversity, preserved areas where nature can thrive or at least exist safely and unthreatened, car free areas children can play safely, and to encourage more green spaces generally, not pave it over. Even as a last resort my vote would be to avoid this at all costs. I understand money is required, but there are other ways. The aim of this whole consultation should be to work out a way of protecting our green, free spaces, they would be better left to grow a little wild or unkempt than be turned into car parking areas, the city already has more than enough parking spaces.
