Sponsorship & Leasing

Newcastle City Council already receives sponsorship from businesses and rents out facilities in parks to businesses. More of this could raise more money to help ensure park facilities do not fall into disrepair. However, commercial operations may charge for services and businesses may want adverts in the parks.

"There should not be adverts in the park - at a push on the way in but not inside, but companies could have the chance to sponsor events or even pay to have their name associated with the park. As discussed earlier, running special events, mini festivals, charging people to use the space for running exercise classes, and running activities for schools could all be options. "We would support the right commercial opportunities but this is directly linked to questions around who would be on the charitable trust broad of trustees and directors. Given that there are commercial opportunities in Leazes parks and in other parks – whereby areas could be turned into café for example, etc. – commercial expertise would be needed. On the other hand, we question whether charging for tennis courts would be cost effective and we stand to keeping free everyday activities in parks." — Workshop Team Two

A small amount of appropriate, ethical sponsorship would seem like a sensible way to raise funds. However any corporate use which closes off free access to areas of the park to the public should be prohibited. Newcastle's parks are such a vital resource for residents. Has the council considered running periodic crowdfunder appeals?

Business sponsorship for parks would need to adhere to strict guidelines. Billboards, fly posting and leafleting would all have to be ruled out. Leasing rooms from unused building space already occurs and doesn't seem to cause any issues. Renovation of Fisherman's Lodge into a commercial space for conferences could work if strict guidelines (including traffic restrictions!) were adhered to. However the overall publicly accessible space would need to remain for the people - free from monetisation and corporate influence. We don't wan't a "McPark."

Big business would love to use the dene for corporate team building events and companies looking to improve their environmental image should be approached as potential sponsors.

Parks are a recognised space to improve mental health, an element of that is because it is not a monetised space. Where in Newcastle can you go without having to see some advertising. You only need to look at the mega-video advertising board at the Haymarket end of Northumberland street to see where this might go.

This could be a good idea but I agree with other points that this would have to be tightly controlled and not take away from the community's right to free access to land and park's features.

Danger that free unsponsored events (e.g. Coca-Cola Tai-Chi) would become charged. Suspect that there is little scope for rental of facilities. Though not adverse to some advertising (e.g 'the Greggs Pond') but reducing public access by subletting should be severely limited. -- Workshop Team 2

"Decision regarding the strategies for generating income should not be made locally because areas which are deprived or don’t have volunteers might not be benefiting. Decision should be informed by local representatives. The paper work and the cost of staff for taking the run of facilities would not make charging for facilities cost effective. In case we could offer spaces for long-term rent to businesses, still we should maintain control over the use of that spaces." — Workshop Team 3

I think that we should consider any reasonable means of generating income. If we can do that by sponsorship deals with businesses, even if it means one or two adverts being displayed, then as long as it is not overdone, so be it. People may not want to see adverts in their parks but, we need to generate income some how and that is one way.

"It must be proportionate, eg. not taking over large areas permanently. Adverts could be ok but not too much of it – we need to be discreet. Sponsorship should be part of the funding package, but we should not rely on it. All parks are different and in some parks, it would not make any money." — Workshop Team

There should be some criteria for business leasing or sponsorship, eg. it should not damage the environment and wildlife; have some health, cultural or educational value.
